2016 Petite Sirah, Thompson Vineyard
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY | LOS ALAMOS VALLEY
The 2016 Petite Sirah maintains darkness, power, and purity of fruit. The cool vineyard site led to long hang time, giving us ripe tannins and balanced natural acidity. With an inky-purple hue and monolithic stature, this wine displays blackberry, tar and mocha. Our Petite Sirah ages slowly and can be cellared for some time. However, ample primary fruit and silky tannins allow for early enjoyment as well.
No one could mistake the 2016 Petite Sirah Thompson Vineyard from Jaffurs for anything but a Petite Sirah, but it's also remarkably elegant, wafting from the glass with aromas of plum preserve, tar, inky black fruits and licorice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, with good concentration and sappy fruit, deep and richly tannic without ever becoming overbearing.
Rounded aromas of black cherry, cola and vanilla meet with more intense expressions of violet and white pepper on the nose of this wine, one of the few Petite Sirahs grown in this county. Black-cherry syrup meets with savory tones of toasted beef and black pepper on the palate, which is framed by polished tannins.
2015 Petite Sirah, Thompson Vineyard
Lilac and olallieberry notes are enhanced by tobacco spice and white pepper on the nose of this rare Petite Sirah bottling from Santa Barbara County. Juicy and rich on the palate, it shows blackberry and blueberry fruit, accented with lavender and anchored with sticky tannins. The finish is marked by char and menthol.
The 2015 Petite Sirah (brought up in French and a tiny portion of American oak) is another terrific vintage and offers classic black (and some blue) fruits, licorice, graphite and charcoal notes, full-bodied richness, good acidity and a clean finish. It's a perfect steak wine.
The 2015 Petite Sirah Thompson Vineyard is fabulous. Crème de cassis, blueberry jam, mint, lavender and blood orange give the wine its exotic, intensely aromatic profile. This is a beautiful, unctuous wine. Don't miss it.
2014 Petite Sirah, Thompson Vineyard
Wine Enthusiast 93 Points Editors' Choice
Though younger than most current Petite Sirah releases, this bottling impresses wildly with fragrant boysenberries and crushed lavender on the nose, proving to be a floral-driven style that’s not beaten down by richness or ripeness, despite the higher alcohol level that doesn’t show at all. Insane amounts of cracked white and black pepper meet with toasted sesame seeds, tart boysenberries and more lavender on the palate.
Wine Advocate 92 Points
A big, rich, concentrated, yet elegant and balanced expression of the variety, the inky colored 2014 Petite Sirah Thompson Vineyard has tons of ripe blackberry, plum, mint and sappy herbs in its full-bodied, focused and pure profile. It should keep for a decade or more.
Vinous 95 Points
One of the many highlights in this range, the 2014 Petite Sirah Thompson Vineyard is another superb wine from Jaffurs. Here it is the wine’s inner sweetness and perfume that stand out most. The firm Petite tannins are present, but they are nearly buried by the sheer voluptuousness of the fruit. Sweet red and blueberry jam, wild roses and a bit of sweetness from the 20% new oak barrels comes through nicely.
