2014 Syrah, Kimsey Vineyard
BALLARD CANYON AVA | SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
Densely planted on sandy soils in the Ballard Canyon AVA, this vineyard gives us concentrated fruit with supple, integrated phenolics. Cherry and mocha aromatics burst from the glass, with underling notes of pepper and cedar box. This wine is full bodied, yet fresh on the palate, with red fruits and sweet tobacco. Finishes long, with fine, dusty tannins.

Purple flowers, blueberry cream and a caramel richness live on the nose of this single-vineyard expression from one of the newer properties in the region. The mouthfeel is dense, the tannins are stiff and the acidity is bright, carrying flavors of charred meat, purple flowers, black pepper and extremely dark berries. It's still young, so drink 2019–2029. — Matt Kettmann
Coming from a terrific site in Ballard Canyon, Jaffurs 2014 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard is beautiful. Black raspberry, dried cranberry, pepper and dried flower notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, ripe, beautifully textured Syrah that does everything right. With its purity and balance, it will evolve gracefully for 8-10 years. This cuvée was completely destemmed and spent 18 months in 30% new French oak. — Jeb Dunnuck
