A densely planted vineyard in the Ballard Canyon AVA, Kimsey gives us concentrated fruit with supple, integrated phenolics. Cherry and mocha aromatics burst from the glass, with underling notes of pepper and cedar box. This is a mid-weight expression of Syrah, vibrant and fresh on the palate, with juicy dark plum and sweet tobacco. Finishes long, with fine, dusty tannins.
The 2015 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard is a bold, authoritative wine, as Syrahs from this site always are. Dense and meaty through the middle, with terrific richness, the Kimsey has a lot to offer. There is plenty of density to the dark cherry and plum fruit, but it's the wine's distinct structural profile and the personality of this Ballard Canyon site that speak with the greatest eloquence. From a site in Ballard Canyon, the 2015 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard spent 22 months in 20% new French oak, which is the smallest percentage of the single vineyard Syrahs. Its deep ruby color is followed by a pretty, perfumed, medium to full-bodied Syrah that has textbook notes of blackberries, black olives, bacon fat, and bouquet garni. It offers balance, tons of character, and a great finish. I like it today, but it has 7-8 years or more of prime drinking ahead of it. Maturity 2018-2026. — Jeb Dunnuck
Snappy black-raspberry and green-peppercorn aromas meet with black-plum paste and purple flowers on the nose of this bottling. It's a lively wine, fresh, floral and medium bodied on the palate, where thyme, rosemary and fennel flavors decorate the dark fruit. — Matt Kettmann
2014 Syrah, Kimsey Vineyard
Purple flowers, blueberry cream and a caramel richness live on the nose of this single-vineyard expression from one of the newer properties in the region. The mouthfeel is dense, the tannins are stiff and the acidity is bright, carrying flavors of charred meat, purple flowers, black pepper and extremely dark berries. It's still young, so drink 2019–2029.
Coming from a terrific site in Ballard Canyon, Jaffurs 2014 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard is beautiful. Black raspberry, dried cranberry, pepper and dried flower notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, ripe, beautifully textured Syrah that does everything right. With its purity and balance, it will evolve gracefully for 8-10 years. This cuvée was completely destemmed and spent 18 months in 30% new French oak.
The 2014 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard is another fabulous wine from Jaffurs. Deep, powerful and virile, as wines from this site typically are, the Kimsey is endowed with tremendous depth and textural resonance. Blackberry jam, chocolate, leather and cloves build into the huge, tannic finish.

Another beauty is the 2013 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard, which shows a cool climate style in its white pepper, sappy, underbrush, flowers and liquid blackberry-laced bouquet. Medium-bodied, nicely concentrated and elegant, with lively acidity, it should evolve nicely for a year or two and keep through 2025.

The 2013 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard is rich, dense and massively tannic, as most wines from this Ballard Canyon site are. Black cherry jam, blackberry, smoke, licorice and dark spices meld together in a deep, unctuous Syrah endowed with real depth and palate weight. This is an especially brooding, potent Syrah that needs time in bottle.
This bottling from a relatively new vineyard in Ballard Canyon shows blueberry fruit surrounded by strands of black licorice and chunks of damp pine wood on the nose. The blackberry, blueberry and crushed violet flavors lead into slight beef char and burnt wood on the palate.
