2014 Syrah, Bien Nacido Vineyard
SANTA MARIA VALLEY AVA | SANTA BARBARA COUNTY
In 2014 the Bien Nacido Vineyard gave us exceptional fruit. Moderate, consistent temperatures provided optimal ripeness resulting in a wine with darkness, minerality, and elegance reminiscent of a fine Côte-Rôtie Syrah. Balanced acidity makes it exciting on the pallet. Plums and dark fruit integrate with Northern Rhône Syrah characteristics of cassis, tar, white pepper and black licorice. A beautiful wine that should age magnificently.

Lush, rich and lovely on the nose, this bottling shows vanilla, black currant, chocolate cake, cola and teriyaki aromas. The texture and flavors are much softer and mellower than expected from the bombastic nose, with smooth black plum, sweetened espresso and purple flowers.

Violets, blueberries, iodine and incense notes all flow to a lifted, perfumed and exotic Syrah that has plenty of fruit, bright acidity and a clean finish. There’s just 310 cases.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard has expressive black currants, plums and dried blueberries notes over suggestions of tilled soil, tar and peppered salami. Very big, full-bodied and rich in the mouth, the palate delivers dried berries and balsamic notes framed by firm, chewy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long.

Blackberries, crushed rocks, peppery herbs, violets and hints of salty minerality all emerge from the concentrated, full-bodied, beautifully layered 2013 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard. Aged 22 months in 24% new oak, this sensational Syrah has serious richness, yet never seems heavy, has building, fine tannin and a rocking finish. Hats off to this team for another terrific effort. This was a sensational lineup from the team at Jaffurs. — J.D.

The 2013 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard is one of the most polished and understated of these wines. Inky blue and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, mint and licorice are all laced together. Despite its considerable flavor intensity, the Bien Nacido is light on its feet, gracious and super-expressive. — A.G.
